The Best Accidentally Vegan Sweets for Halloween
With the pandemic which started in 2020, I don’t know if the usual Halloween parties or trick or treating will actually take place. However, if you want to make some Halloween games or quizzes you could use some vegan sweets as prizes.
This post contains affiliate links which means I make a small profit if you buy through my link. I would never recommend something I didn’t believe in or wouldn’t buy myself, thank you for your support.
Prior to going vegan I didn’t realise how many of the sweets available in the UK were accidentally vegan. I was aware of Oreos and Bournville chocolate being vegan, however these aren’t particularly good for children or Halloween events. The sweets that aren’t vegan usually contain milk or gelatine (pork bones) and even sometimes honey.
If you’re in the US I recommend checking this 40+ accidentally vegan chocolate and candy blog post.
2019 was the first time I’d actually answered the door to trick or treaters and taken my son out too. When I was in my 20’s I went to Halloween parties but usually they weren’t on the day of Halloween. On the day of Halloween I used to just turn the lights out and ignore the door!
My son begged me to go out in 2019 and although I wasn’t sure if he was too young, I compromised and we went to our neighbours houses. I also don’t like to encourage over indulgence. The amount of sweets we got just from a handful of houses was more than enough for a 5 year old anyway.
We spent the rest of the evening answering the doors to other children and I think that was actually my son’s favourite bit.
Although I don’t like to buy plastic packaged items generally speaking, I do think that sometimes the easiest option for Halloween is the little packs of vegan sweets.
Skittles

Skittles are such a great sweet and one of my favourites so I was pleased when I learned that they are accidentally vegan sweets. The small packs are perfect for Halloween parties or trick or treat.
Party Rings
Although these are a biscuit really you can get mini packs of Party Rings so they’re an ideal size for trick or treaters. Especially if you’re struggling to get sweets this time of the year. Last year I had Skittles, Party Rings, Rainbow Drops, Refresher Bars & Love Hearts which was more than enough for the children in our neighbourhood. Plus the children wouldn’t have noticed they were being given vegan sweets!
Rainbow Drops

These vegan sweets are a slightly healthier treat because they’re just cereal with a bit of sugar. Always a hit with children though it seems.
Tesco Lances

Now these aren’t just specific to Tesco but most Supermarkets in the UK have sweet laces which are suitable for vegans. If it’s not Tesco just make sure the ingredients don’t include beeswax as I’ve been caught out with sweets similar to this before.
Tesco Free From Buttons Or Bars

The same with these, most supermarkets have their own brand of Free From Dairy etc buttons and bars. In fact they’re probably all made in the same factory. The free from chocolate isn’t the best quality vegan chocolate but smaller children probably won’t notice so much.
Moo Free

This chocolate is sold in most supermarkets and health store. It’s not my favourite vegan chocolate – that would have to be Vego or Booja Booja (Affilate links) but they’re quite a bit more expensive. The Moo Free brand seems to be marketed to children really as they have animal shapes like this lolly.
Swizzlers
Refresher Bars

This are really chewy bars with a great lemon flavour, definitely a great vegan sweet option for Halloween.
Love Hearts

A classic sweet with the little love messages is Love Hearts (Affiliate link). They are great for Halloween and as favours for weddings I’ve noticed. They’re also a great example of accidentally vegan sweets.
Parma Violets

These Parma Violet (Affiliate link) sweets are very similar in texture to the Love Hearts but these have an almost perfumy violet flavour. Quite a nice accidentally vegan option, I love these vegan sweets.
Lolly

I remember these sherbet flavoured lollies from childhood and they’re usually a great option for children.
Jelly Beans

I’ve noticed that some jelly beans are vegan because they don’t usually contain gelatine but the problem with some jelly beans is that they have beeswax as an ingredient. I recommend reading the ingredients list fully to be sure on these as only the ones I show below are vegan because they were bought from The Vegan Kind.
Millions

I only actually found out that Millions are vegan a few months ago, these are an awesome accidentally vegan find. These seem to be a firm favourite with children, there’s something good about small sweets that keep them occupied for a bit.
Candy Kittens

Candy Kittens (Affiliate link) are available in a lot of different places now, my friend occasionally used to buy me these as a treat when she came to visit. The perfect sweet for me as I love fizzy sweets. If you can bear to share them, great for kids too!
Jealous Sweets

Jealous sweet (Affiliate link) are actually sugar and gluten free too, they have worms, bears & others. These are made as a little treat for grownups but I really liked them so thought I’d include them in this list.
Biona

Biona are a great brand for vegans generally as they have a lot of different things for the food cupboard and they’re vegan. They have a lot of different type of sweets pomegranate hearts, Sour snakes, Jelly dinos (Affiliate links) and others on The Vegan Kind website.
Barratt

Sherbert Double Dip Dap
Sherbert Dip Dap (Affiliate link) another great fun accidentally vegan option for Halloween as it’s a lolly you can dip into sherbert. So messy and fun.
Sherbert Fountain
The Sherbert Fountain (Affiliate link) makes me nostalgic about my childhood, I love the sherbert with liquorice to dip in. However it upsets me a bit that they changed their packaging to plastic! What were they thinking…
Most boiled sweets are actually vegan too but I haven’t mentioned them here as boiled sweets and the conventional lollies are a choking hazard for small children.
I hope this post has been useful, some great vegan sweet options if you’re newly vegan or vegetarian. If you’re looking for some zero waste options for Halloween, check out my post here.
