Dr. Vegan Review – Vegan & Sustainable Supplements
I’ve been taking Dr. Vegan supplements for years now so I thought it was time for a Dr. Vegan review.
I discovered Dr. Vegan supplements because I was looking for vegan supplements that were also plastic free.
I found several brands of supplements that were supplied in glass but there were only a few brands that had refill packs for vegan supplements.
I did write a full blog post with 11 best vegan supplements in the UK, in case you wanted to see what other supplements are available to you.
This post contains affiliate links which means I make a small profit if you buy through my link. I would never recommend something I didn’t believe in or wouldn’t buy myself, thank you for your support.
Why Vegan Supplements
When you’re trying to navigate life as a vegan, you might be wondering why vegan supplements and do vegans even need to take supplements?
I’ve been vegan over 7 years now so over the time that I’ve been vegan I’ve learnt a huge amount about nutrition and what vegans may need to supplement with.
In 2022 I also decided to take a course on nutrition to improve my understanding of the nutritional needs of vegans. The course I took was called Vegan Nutritionist Diploma and I found it really helpful in getting a better understanding of what vegan people may need to supplement with.

To simplify this for you, the main things that a vegan might need to supplement with is B12, Vitamin D and Omega 3 DHA.
I will state that deficiency in B12, Vitamin D and Omega 3 is not something exclusive to vegans.
B12
In the body, B12 is important for making red blood cells and keeping the nervous system functioning correctly.
B12 is commonly found in meat, fish and dairy products and due to this some people on a vegan diet might not have adequate B12 levels.
Many cereals and plant based milks are fortified with B12 now so if you’re unsure if you’re getting enough – see if you can get a blood test done to check your levels.
If you’re interested in other food items that contribute to a healthy lifestyle, I recently wrote a Overherd Milk Powder Product Review. It’s a great way of reducing your household waste by choosing a concentrated milk powder instead.
Vitamin D
Vitamin D is important for regulating calcium and phosphate in the body. A combination of Vitamin D and calcium is what keeps our bones, teeth and muscles healthy.
It has also been linked to the immune system and people who have caught the flu and covid 19 are more likely to have lower levels of Vitamin D in their bodies.
Vitamin D comes from direct sunlight on the skin. In the UK during the Winter (October to March) we can’t get enough Vitamin D from the sun alone, therefore it’s recommended to supplement during this time.
Vitamin D is also found in a select few foods eg oily fish, red meat, liver and fortified foods (cereals and plant milks usually).
Omega 3 DHA
Omega 3 is important for our hearts, eyes and brain health. It’s particularly important for children as their brains develop.
Omega 3 fatty acids are normally found in oily fish, however the omega 3 comes from algae that the fish eat and their bodies convert it to DHA
It is generally thought that most people should eat 2 portions of fish a week to get adequate levels of Omega 3. On a vegan diet this is not possible but you can get omega 3 from seaweed. Plant-based fish alternatives are normally fortified with Omega 3 so check the packaging before you buy.
There’s not a huge amount of evidence on this but kids and adults with ADHD could find their symptoms are reduced if they take an Omega 3 supplement.
If you are unsure what you may need to take, I recommend talking to a dietician and/or getting a blood test taken.

I have to admit that I’ve never tried the Vegums, I’m just not a fan of gummies but I might buy those for my children soon.
There are so many helpful resources on Dr. Vegan’s website. Nutritional advice, a huge collection of supplements, recipes and you can create your own diet profile.
The diet profile is particularly helpful if you’re unsure what you should be taking. You can create yours through the link below. Very easy to use and it recommends the supplements you should take, based on your diet and lifestyle.
Dr. Vegan Review
Now I’ll get to my Dr. Vegan revew. As I said before, I’ve been taking their vitamins for 2+ years and I’m really pleased with them.
I originally started taking all of my supplements from them individually. This was mostly because I added different supplements as I needed them. Eg I started to have muscle spasms and a general feeling of fatigue, so I started taking their magnesium and those symptoms disappeared.
Originally I was taking Magnesium, Iron and Vit C, Omega 3, and Ultra Energy (which is B Vitamins, Choline, Biotin and Folic acid).

I’ve recently decided to simplify my vegan supplements and I now only take their Multivitamin and Omega 3.
I suspect that when I first started taking supplements my diet wasn’t as healthy as it could be and now I’m finding that the combined Multivitamin and Omega 3 works fine for me. (The white capsule pictured is a vegan creatine supplement that I take daily)
If you’re unsure what you should take, definitely have a good look around their website and answer the questions in their diet profile, if you need to.
I do hope you’ve found this Dr. Vegan review useful. I genuinely love this brand and I’ll continue to use them because I’m happy with their supplements and service.
