Creamy Oat Milk Recipe – Homemade Oat Milk like Oatly

At this point I have checked so many oat milk recipes and to be honest, it’s not been the easiest to find a creamy oat milk recipe that actually tastes like Oatly. Making homemade oat milk is actually really easy, but making it taste really good is a bit more of a science experiment.

This is definitely down to personal preference so if you prefer unsweetened skimmed style oat milk, then this recipe isn’t the one for you. However, if like my family – you’re a fan of the sweet creamy tastes that you get from Oatly Whole or Oatly Barista then you’ll love these creamy oat milk recipes.

Why Oat Milk Is Better Environmentally

If you’re interested which of the store bought milks are the best environmentally, I would check this article as they are really thorough. For the most part, even store bought oat milk, seems to be one of the better options environmentally. In this article they state that oat milk uses the least amount of water. However, it does state that organic oats or organic oat milk will be better because some farmers use Roundup on their oats right before harvesting, which is clearly not good for the environment.

This article states that although oats require slightly more land than almond or rice, it’s grown with mainly rain water and they are considered low when it comes to greenhouse emissions.

In terms of making your own milk, oat milk would probably still be the best choice. It’s relatively cheap to buy Oats, even Organic Oats will be much more affordable than say Cashew Nuts.

Basic Oat Milk

Homemade oat milk is so easy to make but the natural recipes that I used for inspiration over the last few months all resulted in oat milk that was a bit gritty and not quite right. Some things that I tried were: Filtering through a tea towel 3 times, rapeseed oil, dates to sweeten, less water, handful of cashews, dash of coconut milk. What I ended up settling on was the below recipe, although not perfect it was frothy and good enough for smoothies.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of Oats
  • 2 1/2 cups of water (this is a thickness that I like, more water would result in thinner milk etc)
  • 3 Pitted Dates
  • Handful of Cashews
  • Drizzle of Rapeseed Oil (you can use any neutral oil that you like or omit the oil altogether)
  • Vanilla Paste (optional)

To make this basic creamy oat milk recipe, it’s actually really simple. Just blitz all of the above ingredients in the blender. Just make sure that you only blend for between 30 – 45 seconds as over-blending results in quite slimy oat milk.

Once blended you just strain the ingredients through a nut bag or tea towel like I did. I didn’t find that sieving a few times really made much difference to the taste, so I wouldn’t waste your time doing this unless you particularly wanted to.

Oat Milk With Enzymes

Finally from a YouTube video I found out that enzymes and heating the oat milk seemed to result in similar results to Oatly oat milk. I can’t for the life of me remember which YouTube video this was but I tried to remember what they did to recreate my own creamy oat milk recipe.

homemade oat milk,

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of Rolled Oats
  • 2 1/2 cups of water
  • Vanilla Paste (optional)
  • Handful of Cashews (also optional)
  • Drizzle of Rapeseed oil
  • 1 Pitted Date
  • 1 tablet of Digestive Enzymes

First step is to put all of the oats and water together along with the contents of the Enzyme capsule. I let this sit for 10 minutes in a blender as it was the most convenient thing for me to do.

Next I blended all of the remaining ingredients together in the blender and strained the mixture through a tea towel.

Next step is to heat the milk, as I’m a proper amateur – I didn’t have a temperature gauge but I just put it on a medium heat for a few minutes and allowed it to cool. Supposedly you heat the milk to kill the enzymes to make sure that they don’t continue to break down the oat milk in the fridge.
